Facing rapid growth across their suite of B2B products, Level needed to evolve their physical and digital systems to improve customer experiences across multiple user journeys. Eventually, expanding their footprint into the B2C prop tech market.

We built close partnerships with key stakeholders across the organization to elevate Level's end to end CX. Our packaging work simplified home lock installation and established a foundational system that could be applied to new products. Together, we launched digital solutions, enabling the business to serve multi-dwelling residential units and transform into what is now Ambient Prop Tech.

Evolve the consumer packaging and onboarding experience to enhance the comprehensive CX strategy. Building off consumer insights and momentum, to introduce the product suite to the B2B marketplace by offering multi-family residential digital solutions.

The Process Deep Dive

Empathize & Define

We consudcted an experience audit of Dwelo –– a leader in smart home solutions aquired by Level— and Level’s digital presence, to identify similarities and gaps within the platforms. We mapped the multi-family journey and created personas to guide our thinking. These assets helped us prioritize use cases to design for the multi-family offering.

Concept & Design

To unify Dwelo’s technology with Level’s clean, streamlined UI, Material+ developed an in-depth design language system—supported by UX writing and strategy—and worked closely with Level’s product team to design a user-friendly experience that both removed barriers for staff and surfaced the right information at the right time.

Material+ developed new templates and content for email and SMS to communications. From these emails, users could open the Level app and seamlessly connect their access permissions while touring, visiting, or moving into a property.

Develop & Iterate

Designers, developers and product managers met regularly to ensure design intent was fully realized during development. We built a close partnership with the CTO and founding team, relentlessly elevating Level's CX. Eventually, this partnership enabled them to scale into what is now known as Ambient Prop Tech.

Our packaging work simplified home lock installation and established a scalable system that can be applied to new products. Our digital product work brought Level's access management proposition into the B2B space, enabling the business to serve multi-dwelling residential units. And our collaboration on product vision helped establish strategies that will empower Level to enter new product categories.

Elevating the Unboxing Experience


We started by crafting a premium B2C packaging solution for the Level Lock+. The design system created a more cohesive unboxing experience for the physical product while also serving as the foundation for upcoming digital and B2C expressions of the brand.

SYSTEMS + SCALE

Building off the patterns and principles established in the packaging work, we expanded the design language specifically for digital. The new system, called Nebula, was robust enough to expand the service offerings into the B2C market, while also maintaining the modern, minimal ethos of the brand aesthetic.

Eventually, this foundational system evolved enough to support a digital theme editor feature where properties could infuse their own brand into the experience, while maintaining interaction and visual consistency with the primary product suite.

The Launch of Ambient

Our design and experience work led to the launch of Level’s new prop tech service offering. Ambient is tried and true—with smart access, automation, and building intelligence solutions that improve apartment living and management in the most impactful, cost-effective way possible.

Combined with Level’s premium brand positioning, Ambient was able to gain traction and build relationships with hundreds of top-tier owners and developers around the world.
